    Hello out there,

I've been working on trying to get my two USR 56k modems to handshake and connect.

The closest I've got is they detect ring and go off hook.

I've got an asterisk freepbx server with two pjsip extensions to my cisco spa122 ata.

I don't understand why they never complete the handshake.

anyone with experience getting past this wall I've hit?

ply the settings below. They will tell the ATA not
to try to "help" and should cause it to just pass through audio unmodified.

    1. After applying the settings to Line 1 and hitting Submit, make sure you wait for the page to reload before moving on to Line 2.

    3. In the Network Settings section:
o Network Jitter Level: Extremely high
o Jitter Buffer Adjustment: No 4. In the Audio Configuration section:
    o Preferred Codec: g711u
o Second and Third Preferred Codec: Unspecified
    o G729a Enable: No
    o Silence Supp Enable: No
o Echo Canc Enable: No o Everything that says Fax: No
    o Modem Line: Yes

    3. If you're not getting any dialtone, check that the SPA has an active Ethernet link on the blue port. If it doesn't have a connection and a valid IP, it'll shut off the voice module.

    4. You will not get a 56k connection speed no matter what you do - the V.90 and V.92 specifications explicitly state that the modems you have ("analog modems") are only capable of originating a 33.6 connection. You need special ISP equipment to originate a 56k connection.

I'm trying to get my own USR 56k to connect over VOIP through my cisc sp122 ata, but no handshake completes.

    Hi Grant,

I don't have this setup anymore, but I was using a StarTech ICUSB232 USB to Serial adapter plugged into a USR Sportster 56k modem. For the phone line I was using a Cisco SPA112 provisioned with service from voip.ms.

I remember there were a couple of settings I needed to change on the SPA112, making sure the firmware was updated (1.4.1 SR5) and some
changes under audio configuration to get it to connect at all.

I believe I used the settings from this page: https://gekk.info/articles/ata-config.html#Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting Section 2 are the settings you're after.

    Jay

track down Keyop on irc.synchro.net #synchronet or get him on his
Magnum UK BBS. He knows freepbx ver well and can help you with your
modems probably. Modems on voip are very unlikely going to connect at
    56K.

    Thank you nelgin.

    I'll try and find Keyop.

I did get my asterisk server working properly .. at least so I can connect a call on my 2 line ATA spa122.

you are right about the speed less than 56k. I can't get them to connect through the asterisk server over 33k.

I still have more to explore with the ATA and asterisk.

like there must be a central pbx in the community to hook into.

    Again thanks for the lead.

I've been working on trying to get my two USR 56k modems to handshake and connect...I don't understand why they never complete the handshake.

Maybe they don't like each other?

Hit up Keyop on Synchronet IRC #synchronet - he knows much about modems
and can probably give you some good connect strings and settings for
your ATA. He gave me some specifics and seem to work well.

you are right about the speed less than 56k. I can't get them to
connect through the asterisk server over 33k.

56k dialup internet connections are asynchronous IIRC. Consumer modems can
only transmit at 33.6k/48k, the ISP modems had to have the (expensive) DSP analogue domain noise/echo cancellation wizardry to be able to send you
    56kbps.

I think that 48k figure is in magical unobtanium conditions too, the
attainable figure is by all accounts 33.6k.

I think Cathode Ray Dude did a video about it, having modems call each other through an ATA. As long as you have a lossless codec, it should work just
    fine as you've experienced!
