• Microsoft Program and Linux

From Mike Dippel@954:895/1 to All on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 16:48:50
I have an HTML editor program that I really need to work in Linux. I decided on Zorin
OS because I read good things about it and its ability to run Windows programs.

Would anyone running Linux wish to try an install of this program? It can be downloaded from my server by going to: https://hobbyline.com/web_trial.zip

It has a dependency of Microsoft dotnet program which I can't seem to install, and I
don't know enough about Linux to be able to figure it out.

I don't want to run a dual boot system. I know I can run Windows in a VM but I have
already wiped Windows from the machine, and my machine might be too old to run a
    virtual Windows OS.

Thanks in advance. BTW, this program is a great HTML editor and free to anyone that
    wants to try it.

Give Wine a shot. It doesn't require a duel boot or having to install Windows. --- SBBSecho 3.31-Linux

I have wine and bottles installed. It is the Microsoft dotnet dependency that is causing a
problem. I would love to have someone more experienced than I try to install it and give
    me feedback.

BTW, the program that I want to install definitely works on Windows. Anyone is
welcome to use it if they want to try a different HTML editor.

It is the Microsoft dotnet dependency that is causing a problem.

I'm curious why an HTML editor should require .Net? I've used a number of different editors and none had such a requirement.

It's an old (retired) Microsoft program. It replaced Microsoft Front Page. I like it
because it allows you to actually log into a server that has Front Page extensions
installed and edit pages LIVE. It has a lot of HTML error controls built in to help ensure
there are no errors in the page.

I use this program on all of my websites, including my customers sites as well.

If you can get it to install on your Linux machine, feel free to give it a try.

You can often install dependencies such as dotnet using a tool called Winetricks. It is very handy for times like this.

You can also look up the Wine compatibility database to check if a program runs at all, or runs badly, or runs perfect, and see if any adjustement to the default configuration needs to be made.

That said, usually it is just better to pick a native tool instead of keeping trying to use old Windows tools. It is not like HTML editors are scarce these days.
