The country of Uruguay adopted its first constitution on July 18, 1830, shortly after
becoming an independent country in 1928.

Although it adopted other constitutions in 1917, 1934, 1952, and 1967, the 1830
version laid the groundwork upon which all later versions have relied.

The 1830 constitution, modeled after the American and French constitutions, created
executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government.

The legislative branch consists of a senate and a house of representatives. Later
constitutions checked the powers of the president and provided for a separation of
church and state. Constitutional amendments adopted in 1976 strengthened the political
    powers of the country's military.

To commemorate the adoption of Uruguay's first constitution, speeches are given by
government officials and a parade featuring a military band, mounted cavalry, and
soldiers is held in the capital city of Montevideo.
