A study was done to observe the testosterone levels of a male demographic (b/w ages
3080) throughout the day. It was found that between the ages of 3040, the testosterone level was 2025% lower at 16:00 than at 08:00.
As you get older, the difference in levels between the two times becomes smaller and
smaller. Increased levels of testosterone directly correlates with increased muscle
protein synthesis.
However, in the morning, you are in a fasted state meaning you have less glycogen
stored in your muscles (less energy).
Your performance in a high intensity workout (anaerobic) will be worse since you dont
have glycogen or glucose readily available.
Your body will begin to produce lactic acid during the workout to supplement the
deprived energy source which could slow you down.
For an aerobic workout such as running or swimming, the oxygen present in the workout
and deprived glycogen will prove to be quite beneficial for fat loss.
Your body will target stored energy through fat oxidation, essentially shrinking the fat
cells.
Conclusions
Both cardio and weight lifting will be more effective in the morning to some extent. You
will witness better fat targeting with cardio and more muscle protein syntheses with
lifting in the morning.
However, if you plan on performing high intensity training in the morning, Id suggest
supplying your body with some sort of carbs prior to the workout so you have sufficient
energy.
