Why does alcohol like beer sometimes lower blood sugar levels hours after drinking it?
Ethanol, which is the alcohol in ALL alcoholic beverages, is toxic and MUST be cleared
out as fast as possible.
The liver is responsible for toxin clearance.
It also clears out insulin, and stores glucose as glycogen to be released into the
bloodstream to fuel the body when sleeping.
When you drink a lot of ethanol, ethanol clearance takes priority over everything else.
That means insulin is hanging around longer than it should, and lowering blood sugar
more than it should, while the liver is NOT raising blood sugar when it should.
