Fatty liver (NAFLD) has become the most common cause of liver cancer in North America. Its associated with the obesity and inactivity epidemic that has plagued
modern society where manual labor has been replaced by sedentary jobs, and fast
processed high caloric foods have become the norm. The same lifestyle that results in a
higher risk of type 2 diabetes also can result in fatty liver.
The good thing is that fatty liver is reversible and if reversed before fibrosis/cirrhosis
occurs the risk of liver cancer declines.
Calorie restriction, pursuing a Mediterranean diet, and intermittent fasting resulting in
weight reduction combined with exercise resulting in being leaner and more muscular,
can reverse fatty liver and lower liver cancer risk, as well as other cancers associated
with obesity and inactivity.
Those include breast, colon, prostate and pancreatic cancer.
For those with more severe fatty liver with scarring (NASH), the FDA approved Rezdiffra
(resmetironm) in March 2024. Its not a home run and only modestly effective but still
its the first treatment of its kind.
