Hi all

Where to begin.

Life has been busy, I've been dealing with the loss of my mum who passed late last year and helping my dad with his efforts to de-clutter / prep my childhood home for upcoming sale. That's involved a lot of air travel and time away from home/work to help out. All of which I have been happy to do but it's also zapped any other energy I have had for hobbies.

As I write this it's increasingly likely that I'll also have some fairly significant life changes of my own in the coming months and my family may well be moving houses.

If/when this happens I expect to keep active in fsxNet and continue to run NET 1 HUB etc. as per usual but I am opting for the coming 12-18 months to simplify things for me in this regard.

So I wanted to let you know a few changes coming up and my plans for the medium term.

1) InterBBS games. I'm going to close this down for now, BRE, FH and GD. I think there is limited activity going on between just a few systems and want to reduce the systems I am running if/when a move to a new house occurs.

The InterBBS league will be shut down on Friday 11 June 2025... that's two weeks from the date I write this. I think this should be enough notice.

2) Usenet Gateway. Ditto for this service (sorry). I am going to shutter this one also and close down my Usenet news server. The gateway will also cease on Friday 11 June 2025 while the NNTP server will shutter at the end of July.

I want to reinstate this down the track, but at this stage I'm signaling it will likely be 12-18 months after the close down.

3) NET 1 + 4 HUBS my plan is to move to using an instance of Clrghouz to service these nodes. That change will take some more time for me to implement as I am time poor and likely juggling prepping a house for possible sale / moving home over the coming 6-9 months. But the goal will be to use Deon's great software to make my life easier as ZC of fsxNet.

What else..

I'm sorry for the lack of activity / service on my part over the last months. At times coming back and trying to do admin for a pile of mounting emails etc. felt too much and my energy levels where just not there.

Today I am playing catch up and adding a bunch of nodes that may (or may not) be that active since the dates they emailed me to join but let's find out.

Did you know on 8 November this year fsxNet will have been around for 10 years? That kind of does my head in :) When I set it up it was just me having fun and wanting to learn about FTN networking etc. Nick at Agoranet was always super kind/supportive with his time and knowledge (as were many others).

I've been lucky to have met many super, kind and talented people through the BBS hobby/interest we collectively share... and I'm looking forward to continuing to do that into the years ahead...

All of which to say is that I am not planning on leaving the scene or shuttering fsxNet any time soon. But I will be busy/tied up with matters of real life (sigh) as the rest of this year and into early next year unfolds.

If/when this happens I expect to keep active in fsxNet and continue to

Appreciate what you have started and kept running for the first decade of your project, and hopeful that you are able to keep it going!

Know there are those of us who quietly have you in our prayers and thoughts.

These sorts of things are shared experiences, as most of us have plenty of tales to recount about life events.

My surprise when these challenges arrive is that when I can help out I am truly happier. Not that the challenge was there, but that opportunities to pay-foward and return-favors (payback in the positive way) could be met.

Hi there

First off a belated happy new year to you. I hope this finds you well and that 2026 has got off to a good start for you.

I've been largely inactive for the last several months (will explain more in a minute) and can see a lot of messages in echomail etc. to try and catch up with in the weeks and months ahead.

I just wanted to drop this note into FSX_GEN and FSX_NET echomail areas to let you know that I'm still about, not planning on leaving the BBS scene, starting a new-wave rock band or opting for hair transplants (heaven forbid!) :)

In brief... around the middle of last year my wife and I decided we wanted to sell our family home of 20+ years (a house built in the 1930's) and move to a property built in the last 10 years or so. Something with more modern construction standards, easier to heat/cool etc.. it turns out as you get older these things seem to matter more #who-knew?!

So we looked and could not find a place that ticked all the boxes. In the end we opted to build a new house and are soon to start on that adventure. The build should take about a year.

The last six months have seen us prep our home for sale and put on the market in late November. Just before Christmas we accepted a purchase offer and the sale went 'unconditional' last week.

We have also sought out and secured a rental property to live in while our new place is built.

In the coming week(s) we will sign a contract to build our new home and move to the rental... so it has been/still is a busy old time in Avon's world.

Next steps.

I'm moving houses in the coming month. Expect NET 1 + NET 4 HUBs to have outages on the day I move. I will try to get HUBs set up again on the same day of the move but it may turn into a 24-48 hour thing as I need to get beds, hot water etc. set up first... you know the drill.

Once I am clear of this upcoming shift I do plan to spend more time on admin and getting back into the BBS hobby a bit more.... but for now it's just been down the list of things to think about/do/enjoy.

I am going to try to get some well overdue updates applied to the nodelist in the coming week.. thanks to folks who have emailed me, and a general apology for my lack of responsiveness due to the above.

That sounds exciting. :) I've sometimes thought it would be nice to have a house custom-built. I think it could take some time to think about a design and layout I'd like, but in the end, it would be nice to have a house that's just the way I like it.
