windows 3.1x is not as bad as the
newer versions
I'd argue that all day ;). BITD I would spend forever installing
Windows 3.x every once in a while.. just to remind myself how bad it
is. And sure enough, about 15-20 minutes later, I'm doing deltree c:\windows. Sooo much time wasted.
The trick was making a backup as soon as you installed it. :)
Having .ini files instead of a registry made it easy to fix, and the
TCP/IP addin to Windows for Workgroups 3.11 made running apps much
smoother than running Trumpet Winsock.
Back then - renting an apartment, single, no family - I had no demands
on my time. Computers were all new and interesting, so spending time
swapping floppy disks didn't seem like that much of an issue - whether
it was installing OS/2 and the fixpacks, Windows 3.11, tweaking .ini
files, config.sys files, running memmaker, watching it crash,
re-tweaking config.sys files, hand-configuring IRQs...
If I had to do that now, I'd probably move to a farm and raise
chickens.
Back in 1994, some of my developers got a hold of early Chicago
(Windows 95) builds. Seeing that was like logging onto the web for the
first time, knew it was going to be a game changer.
